Dealing with Stress

We all have to find ways to manage the stress in our lives and psychologists are no different! We are all feeling the pinch too as the end of year starts speed up with lots of deadlines, events and change. Our team shares what helps them:

Sophie “I find different things work for different stress! I find with stress of a more chronic nature, it is a balancing act – putting enough in the cup for what the stress pours out. .. And I am the first to say that I don’t always get this balance right and sometimes I find myself running on empty. What fills up my cup is daily deposits of exercise (mostly walking) and nature. I would absolutely love to add meditation to this and one day I will! I also find having a routine to the start and end of my day helps – something to get me moving so I don’t become waylaid by other tasks and something that helps me shut down my brain computer systematically so I can sleep (a major stress fighter!) For more acute stress, I find focusing on avoiding overwhelm with list making, prioritising and problem solving, and of course I try to nail down the unhelpful thinking that might see me start to spiral in face of too much stuff to deal with.”

Maddie “Whilst I’m not an exercise enthusiast by nature (at all), I find that whether I like it or not exercising straight after work helps me declutter my mind. I love being at home with my diffuser on and low lights and scrolling through Pinterest for images or quotes that make me feel good! Music, podcasts and TV are all on my self-care carousel as well! I’m also in a social media detox right now as I was feeling flooded by information.”

Kylie “Joy helps me release my stress, so my go-to is busting a groove to shake off the tension. I am known for my ‘happy’ dance moves. Hanging out with loved ones always helps, as does deep breathing and mindfulness. Morning walks with my dog and soul time help set me up to manage the stress of the day ahead.”

Lisa “Growing plants, flowers and vegetables. Being mindful in the garden. Baking, painting, creating, listening to music, collecting and curating vintage fashion and, of course, spending time with friends and family.”

Claudia “I always try to get out most mornings into the fresh air before work. Exercise helps clear my head and sets me up well for the day. I also make sure I socialise during the week with friends or colleagues. If I have had a particularly stressful week, I make sure I schedule in some solo time on the weekend to rest and recover. Who doesn’t love a nap and some Netflix?!”

Monique “As a psychologist, it’s important that I practice what I preach! I prioritise regular exercise with a group of friends. Sometimes, when I feel less motivated to exercise, the social element gives me a purpose to attend. I engage in activities that bring me joy and relaxation, such as reading, spending time outdoors and visiting my nieces and nephew. I also strongly believe in the power of ringing a friend and debriefing life together; I always hang up the phone feeling so much lighter for it.”

Pina “I have a few “go-tos” to help manage stress, including walking with friends, going to the gym, and Friday night pizza and movie night with my kids. Walking my fur baby and coffee are also high on the list.”
