Psychometric Assessment

Psychometric Assessments for Children in Sydney

If you have concerns about your child’s learning, assessment is available from The Young Mind Clinic.

Psychometric testing is a powerful tool for psychologists. These assessments help us understand a child’s cognitive abilities and obtain standardised information about their learning to date in key areas of achievement. Where needed, we are able to diagnose if your child has a specific learning disorder (SLD), intellectual disability or exceptional ability, sometimes referred to as ‘giftedness’.

Our team of highly experienced psychologists are trained to undertake a range of standardised psychometric tests, including intellectual ability assessments (IQ tests) and academic ability assessments.

What are Psychometric Assessments?

Also known as psycho-educational or cognitive & achievement testing, psychometric testing is used to evaluate the knowledge and skills of a wide range of people, including children, adolescents and adults.

At The Young Mind Clinic, we use Wechsler assessments. These are standardised and internationally recognised as among the “gold standard” assessments. These include:

  • The Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence, Fourth Edition, Australian and New Zealand Standardised Edition (WPPSI-IV A&NZ) for children aged between 2 years 6 months and 7 years 7 months;
  • The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Fifth Edition, Australian and New Zealand Standardised Edition (WISC-V A&NZ) for children aged between 6 years to 16 years 11 months;
  • The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, Fourth Edition, Australian and New Zealand Language Adapted Edition (WAIS-IV A&NZ Language Adapted Edition) for adolescents and adults aged 16 years and up
  • The Wechsler Individual Achievement Test, Australian and New Zealand Standardised, Third Edition (WIAT-III A&NZ) for children, adolescents and adults aged from 4 years and up.

What To Expect During a Psychometric Assessment

Psychometric assessments are undertaken for a wide range of reasons, and designed to suit the specific needs of each individual. As a first step, we recommend getting in contact with The Young Mind Clinic to discuss your child’s circumstances and the most suitable plan for you.

If psychometric testing is arranged for your child, this may be administered across 2-3 sessions. Following an initial consultation, we gather background information and determine whether formal testing is appropriate and what needs to be included within the broader assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are some signs that my child could benefit from a psychometric assessment?

Families are recommended to seek out psychometric assessments for a wide range of reasons. Often, these assessments are undertaken to understand any learning barriers young people may face during their school years.

A child may be struggling in the classroom, presenting with behaviours that interfere with learning or other aspects of school life. They may experience emotional meltdowns in response to homework or the end of a school day as well as any other number of signs where a parent might feel that something is not right with their child’s learning or engagement in school.

This is why an initial consultation to review the situation in its entirety can help determine if and what sort of assessment could help your child.

What steps do I take to arrange a psychometric assessment?

Many of our clients are referred to our practice by their school, GP or another doctor. However, it is not essential before making an appointment to see one of our psychologists.

Generally, psychometric assessments are not rebateable through Medicare (unless you have been referred under the Complex Neurodevelopmental items for assessing autism or other complex conditions – for more info click here.)
