The Young Mind Clinic
Providing psychology services for children and teenagers across Sydney’s Lower North Shore.
Child Psychologist Sydney
Navigating the world as a young person may be difficult at times. For those experiencing social, emotional, and behavioural challenges, these difficulties may feel even more overwhelming.
At The Young Mind Clinic, we believe every child and teenager should be able to access evidence-based therapy. With years of experience and a unique understanding of young people, our psychologists are dedicated to providing a supportive treatment plan just for them.
HOW WE AIM TO HELP YOU
We work exclusively with children and teenagers as well as their families. Our team of experienced psychologists not only assist young people in identifying their strengths and learning new strategies to cope with life’s challenges but aim to upskill parents and carers to be able to foster positive relationships and support them when they leave therapy. We offer both therapy as well as comprehensive assessments for various concerns that may affect children and adolescents aged up to 18 years.
Therapy and Treatment
We use evidence-based approaches targeting the particular difficulties the young person is presenting with.
This includes Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) specifically aimed at the particular issue and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy Skills (DBT Skills), as well as Motivational Interviewing (MI), Strengths Based Approaches and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
We ensure our support is offered in a calm and comfortable environment to put you and your children at ease.
Assessments
We provide assessments for a wide range of issues, including Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), specific learning disorder (SLD) or difficulties, giftedness, and intellectual disability (ID) as well as for purposes of identifying cognitive and academic strengths and weaknesses that may assist in educational planning.
We are able to identify whether one or more issues may be contributing to the overall issue the young person is presenting with. Each assessment is comprehensive and includes screening for other possible explanations or issues.
COMMON CONDITIONS WE ASSIST WITH
Whether your child is presenting with some concerns typically seen in young people or may have more clinically significant symptoms or in fact a diagnosis already,, we can provide support. While not an exhaustive list, we assist with difficulties such as:
- Anxiety, including phobias, social anxiety, separation anxiety, generalised anxiety, and perfectionism
- Depression
- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and other obsessive-compulsive behaviours, including tics
- Exam stress and other academic concerns

WHAT TO EXPECT AND HOW TO BOOK
You do not need a referral to book an appointment. However, to obtain a Medicare rebate, you should speak with your GP to obtain an eligible Mental Health Care Plan. A referral is not typically required for those seeking private health insurance rebates, but you should check your level and conditions of coverage with your insurer.
For children under 16, we usually schedule an initial consultation with one or both guardians, ideally both if they can be present. For separated families, an initial consultation with each parent can be arranged separately.
The purpose of this is to gather essential background information, allowing for open discussion and determining the best next steps. For children 16 and older, the first consultation includes both the young person and the parent/s, typically with time spent together and separately with the psychologist.
Telehealth options are available. For those coming into the clinic, please inform us of any mobility issues, as there are stairs at the clinic entrance.
To book an appointment, please contact us here or phone us on (02) 9420 0896.
