Spotlight interview – Lisa Wood, Psychologist

How did you know you wanted to become a psychologist?

I have always been fascinated by people and knew that I would look for a career that was person centred. Psychology provided the opportunity to learn and understand more about human behaviour and to support people who needed assistance. Studying developmental and educational, clinical and counselling, neurological and health, social and community psychologies has been and continues to be very rewarding. Psychology as a science is always evolving, there is always something new to learn.

What inspired you to work with young people?

At a young age, I used to help my ballet teacher when she taught the ‘little ones’ and I enjoyed every minute. From there, I progressed to working with children and young adults in different settings. I enjoy the enthusiasm and honesty of young people. Being part of a young person’s journey is a privilege.

What is your typical therapy mode and why do you find it to be so helpful?

I find that Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is a very useful approach for young people. It is evidence based and practical. I find any therapeutic approach is enhanced by an understanding of a young person’s world, and I like to take the time to learn about my clients’ families, friends, school life, hobbies, interests, strengths and social media use.

We all feel stressed sometimes, including psychologists! What helps you to manage your own stress?

Growing plants, flowers and vegetables. Being mindful in the garden. Baking, painting, creating, listening to music, collecting and curating vintage fashion and, of course, spending time with friends and family.

If you could have given your teenage self any advice – what would you have said?

You do not need everyone’s approval, you are enough.
